CUSTOM FABRICATION

Dressed & Welded to Fit Your Property

At CSN Trade Specialists, we dress lead into custom-made items suited specifically for your property. Every property is different — and off-the-shelf flashings rarely provide the watertight seal your roof demands.

We hand-dress and lead-weld bespoke flashing components on-site or in our workshop, ensuring a precise fit against your roofline, chimney, parapet, or penetration. Our finished pieces are built to last and conform to the exact profile of your structure.

Whether it's a complex chimney surround, a custom soaker, a pipe sleeve, or a fully welded valley lining — we fabricate it right the first time.

WHY LEAD?

The Gold Standard in Flashing Material

Lead has been used in roofing for centuries — and for good reason. It is incredibly malleable, making it ideal for dressing around complex shapes and profiles. It is naturally corrosion-resistant, long-lasting, and self-sealing over time. When properly dressed and fixed, lead flashing outlasts the roof itself. We work with lead because it simply provides the best result for heritage homes, tile roofs, and any application where a rubber or aluminium alternative won't cut it.

LEAD WORK 101

Facts & Tips About Lead in Roofing

01

Lead Has Been Used for 2,000+ Years

Romans used lead on rooftops across Europe. Its longevity is proven — properly installed lead flashing can last 100 years or more, often outliving the roof it protects.

02

It's the Most Malleable Flashing Material

Lead can be hand-dressed around virtually any shape — chimney corners, curved profiles, tile nibs, and complex junctions. No other material matches its ability to conform perfectly to irregular surfaces.

03

Lead Self-Heals Small Imperfections

Lead oxidises on its surface to form a stable patina (lead carbonate) that is self-sealing. Minor surface scratches or micro-cracks close over time, reducing the risk of long-term leaks.

04

Incorrect Fixing Causes Fatigue Cracking

Lead must be fixed with the correct lap lengths and without being over-secured. Thermal movement is significant — if lead is restricted from expanding and contracting, it will fatigue-crack. Our team always follows NZ best-practice fixings.

05

Chimney Flashings Are the #1 Leak Source

More than half of all roof leak calls involve the chimney. Poorly dressed or deteriorated lead step and back-gutter flashings allow water to run straight down the masonry into your ceiling. A correctly welded lead surround is the permanent fix.

06

Lead is 100% Recyclable

All lead offcuts and old flashings we remove are recycled. Lead is one of the most recycled metals in the world — so choosing lead work is also an environmentally responsible choice.
